When Life Gets Overwhelming, Go to the Beach!

TLDR: My weekdays are all messed up this week! I was away for a few days and took a couple of days off from work, and my days are all messed up and confused now! It’s so important to take that time off and let yourself reset and recharge and help you get back on track with your goals and things that you want to do and focus on!

This past weekend, a good friend of mine was going to a business event in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, from Friday evening until Sunday evening. As a “getaway” I tagged along. The Air B&B was only a 4 minute walk from the beach and I figured I could spend time at the beach reading and journaling, and then also get a decent amount of work done too. I would be hanging out by myself during most of the days while my friend was at her conference so I figured I would be able to be productive in addition to being able to relax!

That didn’t end up happening. My friend and I talked business for both of us (she owns her own business as well!) when she wasn’t at her event, and then when I was by myself (and with her too) I just stayed in relax mode for a few days. I honestly don’t know when the last time I actually took a “vacation” was. I went away on a couple of trips last year, but they were all business related and while parts were relaxing and fun, I was in work mode for those trips. Then of course I did have almost 2 months off, but I wouldn’t call that a vacation seeing as how I was recovering from surgery and for the majority of that time I was working from home! My point is, it was GREAT to have a few days to just hang out.

There is something about the beach that just makes me feel relaxed. As soon as we got into the island, I feel like there was a shift of some sort and I was just in beach mode and relaxation mode and ready to chill and enjoy. It was still off season on LBI and it was fantastic. There was nobody on the beach essentially while I was there. I got to watch a couple of beautiful sunsets and got up early to watch some unreal sunrises. During the day, I walked around a lot, sat on the beach, read, wrote, ate delicious seafood, and just was present in the time. I thought a couple of times about how I “should” be working because there was and is plenty that I could be doing, but then I realized that I had been feeling pretty overwhelmed and getting to the edge of burnt out. Been there, don’t need to do that again! So I took the time to myself and for myself and just did what I wanted to do!

One of the times that I walked to the beach, there was a girl, probably around 10, maybe a little bit younger, who said to her brother as I was walking by “I feel so normal when I’m at the beach!” And I was like “same, girl, same!” The relaxation and the break was needed. Did it throw off my awareness of the weekdays and time and change my schedule for when I was planning on doing certain things - yep! Was it worth it though? Yep! I am back now from a great long weekend and ready to get at it again! Also, I’m ready to go back to the beach again, but then again, I always am!
